Basics

What does spread mean? #

The spread is the difference between the price at which you can buy (offer price, ask) and the price at which you can sell (bid price). If you buy and immediately sell again, you lose exactly this difference.

A tight spread indicates high liquidity and low trading costs. A wide spread makes trading more expensive – this happens mainly outside main trading hours or in hectic market phases.

What spread can you expect for A41BTT? #

During Xetra trading hours, A41BTT’s spread is typically just a few hundredths of a per cent. In a sample taken on 30 October 2026 (price data from onvista), the spreads displayed on German trading venues ranged from 0.00% to 0.03%, and on gettex they worked out at just under 0.09%.

With €STR at around 2.44%, the ETF earns about 0.0064% a day after costs – so a spread of 0.03% is recouped after about five days. With the current swap premium it’s a little faster, but as the premium isn’t guaranteed, it isn’t included. The calculator shows how long it takes for your amount.

How to keep the spread small #

  • Trade during Xetra hours Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 17:30 German time, market makers quote the tightest prices. In extended trading until 22:00, the spread is often wider.
  • Set a limit With a limit order you set the price yourself and avoid outliers.
  • Compare trading venues If your broker offers several exchanges, it’s worth taking a quick look at the bid and ask prices.
  • Don’t buy for just a few days For money you’ll need in a few days, your current account is the better place.
